Surface downward PAR/SWR/UV radiance
using MODIS direct-recieving data by AIT/IIS Tokyo-Univ

developed by H. Murakami JAXA/EORC 9 June 2010

Introduction:

Estimation of Photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) is an essential parameter to estimate the primary production. We expanded the SeaWiFS PAR algorithm (Frouin et al., 2003) to Terra and Aqua MODIS, and also over the land. Using TOMS/OMI ozone, aerosol and cloud properties retrieved simultaneously, we calculated shortwave radiation (SWR) and UV radiance which can be validated using many ground (the land and ocean) sites, such as AERONET, CEOP, and TAO/TRITON, BSRN, WOUDC, and so on. The more than ten years time series of the satellite PAR and SWR showed good agreement with in-situ observations within about 10-15% (8 days) and 8-12% (monthly) accuracy.
This dataset is one of the JASMES datasets and results from a cooperative research conducted by JAXA and NIES.
MODIS data used in this research was received at Bangkok receiving station with the collaboration work between Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo (IIS/UT) and GeoInformatics Center, Asian Institute of Technology (GIC/AIT).

 - daily/YYYY/
   - daily PAR [Ein/m^2/day] (direct+diffuse solar irradiance in 400nm-700nm)
   - daily direct PAR [Ein/m^2/day] (component of direct transmission)
   - daily mean shortwave radiation [W/m^2] (solar irradiance in 250nm-2500nm)
   - transmittance of instantaneous PAR at noon
   - daily mean UVA [W/m^2] (solar irradiance in 315nm-400nm)
   - daily mean UVB [W/m^2] (solar irradiance in 280nm-315nm)

 - monthly/YYYY/
   - monthly average of direct PAR
   - monthly average of daily PAR [Ein/m^2/day]
   - monthly average of shortwave radiation [W/m^2]
   - monthly average of transmittance of instantaneous PAR at noon
   - monthly average of UVA [W/m^2]
   - monthly average of UVB [W/m^2]
